Seitan Bánh Mì
Bánh Mì are French-Vietnamese fusion food. These sandwiches are often served with pork as the main ingredient, but really any protein can be used in this sandwich. I chose to make this vegetarian and used seitan. However, you could easily replace the seitan with tofu, chicken, or any other protein you prefer.
These sandwiches may sound a bit odd (I thought so the first time I tried one) but they’re absolutely delicious! I highly recommend giving this recipe a try.
Ingredients:
1 Tbsp canola oil
1 Tsp sesame oil
1 garlic clove, minced
1 shallot, minced
Sriacha hot chili sauce (use more or less depending on how spicy you like it)
1 Tbsp soy sauce
1 1/2 Tsp sugar
1 1/2 Tsp five spice powder
Seitan (I used two packages)
1 loaf of baguette bread
Marinated carrots and daikon
Cilantro sprigs
Sliced jalepeno
Romaine lettuce
Mayonnaise
Preheat the oven to 300 F.
Heat the canola and sesame oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add in the shallots and garlic and cook 1-2 minutes. Add in the soy sauce, sriacha, sugar, five spice powder and cook about five minutes. Add in the seitan, stir and let it simmer about another 5 minutes.
Reheat the baguette bread in the oven until it is warm and crusty, about 5 minutes. Cut the baguette in half lengthwise and spread both sides with mayonnaise. Next add the seitan mixture, including pan juices onto bread. Garnish with marinated vegetables, cilantro, romaine lettuce and jalepeno.
